My name is Chip Sweeney, and I am an aspiring sports journalist. I am currently studying broadcast journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am majoring in broadcast journalism and minoring in history, with hopes to go to law school to pursue a JD and MBA following graduation from UNC.
I am from Huntington, West Virginia, where I lived all my life before moving to Chapel Hill. I graduated from Huntington High School in 2017, where I finished 5th in my class with a 4.7 GPA. During my senior year, I was named Captain of both the varsity golf and tennis teams. In my four years, I won three tennis state championships, including captaining the team to its first team state championship in five years.
Along with athletic achievements, I was voted Freshman and Sophomore Class President, as well as Student Body Treasurer my senior year. I was also voted President of the school’s Latin Club and Beta Club. I was involved with the school’s National Honor Society, Spirit Club, Key Club, and Honors Program.
As a part of the Honors Program, for my senior capstone project, I ran a charity bingo event to raise money for the refurbishing of athletic facilities of a local after-school center for at-risk youth. The event raised over $30,000, and was part of the city of Huntington’s winning pitch for the America’s Best Communities Competition.
At UNC, I am involved with the club tennis team at the school to continue my . Along with club tennis, I joined a student-run broadcast show called Sports Xtra. As a part of this show, I film any and all sporting events associated with UNC for a weekly sports show. As a part of this show, I covered football, basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, field hockey, volleyball, softball and baseball at one of the most prestigious athletic institutions in the country. Sports Xtra gave me the ability to film a women’s soccer national championship, interview a Hall of Fame basketball coach, and learn everything necessary to put together a news show.
I am an avid sports fan. I enjoy watching just about every sport I can get my hands on, but my favorite to watch is soccer. I also enjoy watching and following baseball, basketball, football and virtually any other sport that presents itself. I am a fan of Chelsea FC, the Cincinnati Reds, the Baltimore Ravens, and of course, any and every UNC sports team.
In my free time, I enjoy playing golf, tennis and any sort of physical activity with my friends.
